In an era where we can adjust the thermostat, turn on the lights, and see who’s ringing the door bell with a simple voice command, many of us have become conditioned to rely on smart technology in our homes. Unfortunately, there are some things that we still have to do on our own — and cleaning is at the top of the list.
For years, robot vacuums have been marketed as an effortless way to keep your home clean without lifting a finger. Realistically, they can’t replace the need for manual cleaning, but they can help keep your place tidy in between your routine chore sessions — that is if they works as they should. Oftentimes they get stuck on a piece of carpet, against the wall, or die before the job is done. Overall, they can be a waste of money and very ineffective.
Fortunately, robot vacuums have come a long way with the addition of smart technology and the new ECOVACS DEEBOT 900 is one of the best you can buy in terms of value and functionality.
The DEEBOT 900 uses Wi-Fi connectivity, Alexa, Google Assistant, and smartphone app compatibility to take usability to the next level. Using the brand’s third generation mapping and navigation system, Smart Navi 3.0, it ensures that every area of your household is cleaned, with no corners missed (unless you want them to be). Once it’s set up, the robot will scan and map your home, which allows it to orient itself and plan an efficient cleaning path to follow. From there, you can view the scanned map to further customize how your DEEBOT 900 cleans with three modes — prioritized cleaning, targeted cleaning, and virtual boundaries.
Even with all the customization options available, the DEEBOT 900 also works well independently. You can it set to the automatic cleaning mode and if the battery is low, it will go to its charging station, recharge itself, and then return to where it left off to finish the cleaning session.
ECOVACS sent me the DEEBOT 900 so that I could experience it firsthand. I’ve been using it at home for about two weeks and it has significantly cut down the amount of time I spend cleaning.
I personally hate cleaning, but I hate messes and clutter even more. When life (or procrastination) gets in the way of chores, there comes a point where I can’t take it anymore and tirelessly work until everything is clean. With the DEEBOT 900, I’ve been able to do less cleaning while maintaining a tidier apartment throughout the work week.
Between reading instructions, setting up the vacuum and charging station, and downloading the ECOVACS app, it took me about 15 minutes to get it ready for its first mapping run. Initially, I was unsure how accurate the mapping technology would be with all the furniture and stuff around my apartment. In the end, the mapping process worked surprisingly well. I didn’t experience any trouble whatsoever, but you can re-do it if need be.
What I like best about the DEEBOT 900 is that it works autonomously. There’s nothing better than setting it up and not having to fuss with it furthermore. When the DEEBOT 900 is doing its scheduled rounds, it’s very quiet and non-disruptive, unlike a normal vacuum cleaner. I also love that it charges on its own. It’s one less device I have to worry about plugging in regularly.
I found the app to be the easiest and most intuitive way to control the device, but the Alexa voice integration works seamlessly as well.
The DEEBOT 900 isn’t the only robot vacuum with comparable app compatibility, mapping technology, and smart home integration — but it is the best value. Priced at $399.99, it’s still a lot cheaper than the iRobot Roomba 980 even at it’s $699.99 sale price. Granted, it’s still not a cheap device, but with the peace of mind and convenience of keeping a cleaner home, it’s well worth the money.
If you’ve been thinking of picking up a robot vacuum, I strongly recommend the DEEBOT 900. Don’t sell yourself short with an older generation that can’t get the job done or a more expensive model with similar features.
