Social media is stirring with blindfolded people doing the #BirdboxChallenge, inspired by scenes depicted in the popular Netflix movie. The problem is, it can be a bit dangerous.
Police in Utah say a driver was covering her eyes and participating in the so-called “Bird Box Challenge” when she crashed into another vehicle on Monday.
The Layton City Police Department tweeted Friday that the crash caused no injuries. The department warned drivers not to participate in the viral challenge, in which people move around while wearing blindfolds, a reference to the Netflix film “Bird Box.”
“Bird Box Challenge while driving…predictable result,” the department’s tweet said.
Deseret News reports the driver was 17-years-old and allegedly pulled a beanie hat over her eyes while driving a pickup truck at about 35 mph.
“It didn’t take long for her to lose control,” Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman said, per Deseret News.
“It’s just outrageous that somebody would think to do that,” Lyman said, according to the publication. “The stakes are just way too high to do something like that while you’re driving.”
Citing Lyman, the publication said the driver began swerving before she veered into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a vehicle. The teen then hit a light pole and a concrete barrier, according to the publication.
Last week, Netflix warned people about the potential safety hazards of participating in the “Bird Box Challenge.”
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE,” the company tweeted on Jan. 2. “We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
In December, Netflix’s popular movie “Birdbox” captured audiences, spurred memes and sparked debates among millions of viewers during its first week of release.
In the film, Sandra Bullock’s character Melanie and two children (Boy and Girl) navigate a post-apocalyptic world while blindfolded to avoid seeing an ominous figure. In “Bird Box,” seeing the mysterious monster has deadly consequences.
